Interesting twist on the subject

You may be right. I wonder what the actual ratio to people "just driving the same speed everyone else is" is when compared with the ratio of people "deliberately speeding".

Perhaps the bulk of society would be better off with just a nice sign to remind them how fast they are actually going relative to the current speed.

That could significantly decrease the volume of speeding tickets handed out which should be the primary goal of any Law enforcement. That - of course - wouldn't mean the speed cameras would no longer be required. In my humble opinion, they should be in place to tag those who deliberately speed.

After all - those who deliberately speed don't just increase the danger to themselves. They increase the danger to me as well whether I am a pedestrian or fellow driver sharing the road infrastructure. I have no problem if someone else wants to increase their own risks (if they want to skydive without a parachute to see if they'll live, nock themselves out) but they have no right to decide to increase the risks of danger to me (I'll never willing agree to skydive without a parachute).

The don't have the right to decide what risks (life-n-death, money, etc) I take on.

Interesting

I took a coast-to-coast road trip across the USA last year, and once we got
out of town, it was remarkably satisfying to set the cruise control, and drive
with my whole attention focussed on the road, rather than continually looking
down at the numbers on my dash to check I had not drifted above some
arbitrary number, totally unrelated to the road conditions. I was much more
relaxed, more aware of my surroundings, and generally a lot safer. Until this
trip, I had thought automatics and cruise control a mere convenience I could
live without, it never occurred to me they might be a safety feature!

My feeling is that for the majority of law abiding citizens, the posted speed
limits are more a hazard than a help to road safety. They form good
guidance, but worrying about not violating various absolute rules is actually a

real distraction from the road. Too many of the rationales involve pointing to

folks who are not even obeying the current laws - they are not impacted by
the hazard of the rules.

Now I just need to see a cruise-control like feature for use around town,
essentially a speed-limitter that might be overridden on demand (sometimes
that is the safest way out of a sudden incident), but means I don't need to
worry about a heavy gas pedal most of the time.

There used to be a flashing sign at an off ramp North of Toronto. Everyone I
know made it a game to get the light to flash "too fast". They have
used the speed displays in my area and most people are 20-30 over the limit.
One night I was passed on the right while I was doing double the limit and
slowing to make my turn.
