Vista has lots of advantages over Windows 8. It supports the Start button and
multiple, overlapping windows, easier access to management utilities and system
management. Windows 8 is better dealing with file loading and saving, slightly
improved security and internal/external communication, but the loss of key
usability features swamps those improvements.
I've been considering which Windows box to suggest to a (not very computer
literate) friend when her Windows XP box becomes unrecoverable (It won't run
Linux or Windows backup solutions such as Ghost or Acronis - probably a BIOS
problem). (I have a Linux recommendation, already, but I want to make sure that
all my friends potential uses can be met.)
I found a box. At the moment, it is a choice between an Intel i5, 1TB disk
drive, 6GB RAM and Windows 8 or Intel i3, 500GB. 4GB and Windows 7 at a £20
premium.
If I decided to go Linux, then the cheaper box with Windows 8 is much better
value (there is, of course, no Linux version of the box).
If there was only a choice between identical boxes at the same price with either
Vista or Windows 8, I think I would have to recommend the Vista machine.
