French Minitel a source for prior arts?

Minitel was much more widespread, and was not TV-based, but a self-contained
unit with (I think) a 7" screen and attached chicklet-like keyboard (there
were several models), connected to the rest of the world over ISDN if available,
over 1200/75 modem otherwise.

Why widespread? The PTT gave you the option of getting a Minitel or getting your
updated paper phone book - your choice.

Primitive block graphics, monochrome (at least that's what I had). But it
started eCommerce - legit and illegit - and was pretty different, being an
interactive terminal independent from any TV, from Teletext and other.
