It seems to me that a judge has to treat the parties fairly, not equally. I'd note the above example of punishing the bully and the kid he's bullying both: it's equal treatment, but not fair treatment. That's especially true in a system where a party has to respond or lose the right to dispute something.

Yes. She did that after I posted this. (At least there was no mention of it
here, and I had not seen it on Google news until the next day.) So I couldn't
have known. But I'm happy to see it. It suggests some learning might be
happening.

It is just so unfortunate that it is so expensive to either or both of the
parties, and sometimes to innocent others as well, that it often takes so long
for courts to learn what is going on. (Eagerly clicking refresh on multiple
browser pages to hear about Prenda . . . .)
