What's your smart phone or tablet running?
Odds are it's either Android (Linux) or iOS (BSD). Even Blackberrys have a Unix
based core.
Last I heard, Windows is pretty much a failure on those devices.

Most households with any decent amount of electronics unknowingly have more
computers running Linux than they have computers running Windows and Mac put
together.
Yes, Linux is taking over the world.
Windows on the desktop is actually small potatoes.
Non Unix and Non Open Source OSes running on a cpu are now an anomaly rather
than the rule.
Phones and Tablets are huge in numbers, but there is an iceberg underneath that
tip.
TV set. DVR. Set top box. GPS navigation unit. Ebook reader. Personal media
player. Digital cameras. Digital photo frames. DVD players. Some modern
VCRs. Home/office routers. WiFi routers.
Anything with a web based control panel, like a modern printer. Just about
anything with an ethernet or usb connector or WiFi or Bluetooth support.
For every smartphone, there is probably a router or WiFi router. Some people
with routers don't have a smartphone. Some people with two or three smartphones
have a router. So think about the numbers here. Think about the numbers of
people with TV sets that have on screen displays.
Try this experiment. Indulge me.
Follow this link to Sony's Open Source Code Distribution Service.
http://products.sel.sony.com/opensource/
Click on Television.
Stop and catch breath. Wow, that's a lot of television models that have
Linux since 2003. And that's just Sony brand televisions.
Pick a television model. For instance, let's pick the model KDL-37M4000.
Click it.
That takes you to where you can download the Linux source code for that model of
television set.
Why Linux in a television set?
Remember: if it has a screen, if it has an on screen menu, if it has an ethernet
jack, WiFi, SD card support for multiple filesystems, if it has a web based
interface or control panel, if it has USB, etc., then it probably already has
Linux inside, and has had for years.
Yes, Linux is taking over the world.
There are excellent and many reasons all of these systems are NOT running
Windows.

Linux is taking over the world.
Emb
edded developers prefer Linux, love Android
Now try
adding together all of the Linux variants and see what percent you
get.

You have you use Microsoft because you purchased software that has locked your
data into Microsoft formats. You were warned, but you didn't believe it.
You have to use Microsoft because you don't want to be out of the crowd you've
been travelling with. Don't look now, but their jerseys are all emblazoned with
"Lemming".
You have to use Microsoft products because you can't endure the pain that would
be entailed in switching to something else. Yes, it will be painful. No, waiting
til later won't make it better. You will notice that Microsoft has not been
busy making life better on the island, but they have been putting more
alligators in the moat.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

People have the right to install known malware on their hardware.
People have the right to run insecure computers.
Combine those two datapoints, and you have the reason why people run
Microsoft products. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
