Most of the 'X' apps don't know anything about 'X'. They're actually GTK or Qt
apps. You can switch the lower levels of the UI stack (such as 'X') to something
else and those apps will never know the difference. The Wayland project is
counting on this same fact to make its own introduction practical.

There are a few true 'X' apps around, but they are rare as hen's teeth. I have
been using Linux for more than 10 years, and I can only recall ever using a
couple of true 'X' apps (e.g. XPDF), and I have used none of those for a number
of years now. These days, X11 is just some low level graphics gubbins for most
people.
