If a company is into a loss-leading business model, then that is bad for this
company, but I see no reason to prevent a rightful owner of a device from doing
whatever he likes with it.
I, as an Austrian living in a city where 20% of the population voted for the
communist party, am always astounded how much hatred and paranoia US-citicens
often have towards communists, but on the other hand how easy they succumb to
such "communistic" ideas as forbidding someone to do with his own
property however he pleases.
If "not so many" people buy a PS4 to make a regular computer out of
it, the impact to Sony will be small, so they stay in business. If many people
do that, then PS4, XBox and other console sellers will ALL have to raise prices
to at least cover their own costs.
So still all of them stay in business, they just have to compete against other
computer manufacturers and not only amongst themselves.
I fail to see how such a scenario could possibly lead to the "death"
of any console selling company, unless they are unwilling to adapt to the
required changes.
On the other hand, EVERY company unwilling to change itself is a goner sooner or
later.
I believe, that the free market is a good regulator of the economy, and should
therefore be regulated as little as possible. Regulations are only necessary
when people get ripped of from monopoly companies (because then the market is no
longer "free") and for certain areas like health care (because someone
with a chronic illness usually does not have the strength to litigate against a
health care insurance company unwilling to fulfill it's contractual
obligations).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
