No it isn't.

It gives you a soft partitioning tool. You can expand LVs and the filesystems
that live in them without even unmounting said FS.

It gives you snapshotting capabilities - really useful for creating atomic
backups of live filesystems while those filesystems are still actively being
modified.

It gives you the ability to move your data from one physical device to another -
so you can use it to migrate your installation to your new, large
(externally-mounted) drive whilst it's still live. Makes upgrading hardware much
easier.

There's a bunch of other toys as well - although they're probably of little use
on a laptop.
