Kids pick up worse words than that in primary school
playgrounds.
I really hate how "family-friendly" is used to mean "totally
and utterly PC so no-one can possibly get offended"
IIRC, the
"family" in question, as PJ defined it many years ago, consists of her
grandmother: PJ's rule is that Groklaw should be something PJ could be proud of
showing to Grandma, something her grandmother would be happy with.
Recently,
PJ let it be known that her grandmother (maybe the same, maybe the other) is a
teacher of English. This might mean that the way I ended the previous paragraph
is out of bounds, as being something up with which one shall not put.
:~)
Groklaw is not a PC or "Family Friendly" environment. It's a working
site, at which much value is obtained from its bounded freedom to socialize, to
discuss marginal or even foreign topics, so long as it's done with honesty,
without ad hominem (or other) attacks, etc. The word in question,
"bastard", might be acceptable iff it is properly used: proper use would
require detailed knowledge of the person's parentage, would be used only to
characterize that parentage, and not in a way that constitutes an ad
hominem attack ("He's mean/evil/wrong because his parents weren't married to
each other when they shoulda been.").
Groklaw is "family friendly" as a
side-effect of PJ's design. It's definitely not PC: if truth, as documented,
is offensive to someone, so be it. --- --Bill. NAL: question the
answers, especially mine. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
