Basic database usage patented
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, February 28 2013 @ 07:03 PM EST

Wow - they just described one of the core uses of any database. Heck - with search functionality, you could even claim a spreadsheet used to store info infringes the patent.

I use gnumeric at home to store my movie library. I've issued searches on it which goes out and identifies any cells (regardless of the data in the cell) that match my query. If gnumeric uses more then 1 algorithm for the search (a very high likelihood) then I'm infringing that patent just searching for a movie in my library.

If a "plug-in module" can be synonymous with "function"
And "information identifier" can be synonymous with "name"
And "heuristic" is synonymous with "search"
And "displaying a representation..." is synonymous with "reporting"
We get:
1. A method for locating information in a computer system, comprising the steps of:

  • inputting a persons personal info like a name
  • using the persons name in several functions (for example a function to get the home address, a function to get the persons golf scores)
  • reporting the collected information back to the person issuing the query
  • Forgive me for being more straightforward in my word usage then the usual patent legal lingo.
