The world is a very large place, and it is becoming easier and easier to
interact across long distances, but it wasn't always so.
Don't forget the context in which your two sports examples originally came into
being. The rest of the world was a long distance in travel time from the United
States, and the two sports events in question were uniquely American in nature.
I don't think billing the US professional baseball series as the "world
series" would have been an unreasonable assertion when it first appeared.
There were no other serious contenders.
I don't think the NFL has ever used "world" to describe any of its
championship games, but I could be wrong.
We may represent 5% of the population, but you also know darn well that we're
asked to do a lot more by the rest of the world ... and have also accomplished
more ... than that 5% would indicate. The world is a large place, but the US is
also one of the few very large players.

On the World Series, name one country other then US, Canada and Japan that have
professional baseball teams. Name any one country other than the US that had
professional baseball teams prior to the creation of the "World
Series".
On the NFL: The terms "world champion" and "world
championship" are NOT used in any official capacity by the NFL.
Your last example wasn't even a US company.
At best you have ONE valid example, MLB. But again unless you can point to
another country that had professional baseball teams at the time that the World
Series was created this example is at best exceedingly week for showing what you
claim. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
