Of course - the GPL forbides anyone re-releasing as a proprietary binary so that comparison between BSD and GPL is rather an apples to cars comparison.

BSD favours the programmer ...

On that I disagree. BSD favours neither the programmer nor the user.

It favors the middle man between the programmer and user:

the proprietary company that wants to take someone else's work, wrap it in a binary, call it proprietary, and start charging monthly fees against it as though they had done any actual work In short: it favors the troll that wants to collect a toll on the bridge he had nothing to do with.
