guys, can I pick your brain, please?

I seem to be stuck in Fedora 16 on my
Acer Aspire. It won't let me upgrade,
and the issue, I gather, is the bios
won't do the upgraded Linux kernel. From
what I've read, the solution is to
go to Acer and upgrade the bios.

When I do, Acer says that it won't help
you put another operating system on their
stupid Windows laptops. And they have
warnings all over the place about upgrading
the bios in a wrong way, meaning I think
downloading the wrong one.

My laptop is 7739Z. The bios used in it
is ... rats. I forget. Intel, I think,
64, around 2011, I think. And I thought if
I reinstalled Windows 7, I might navigate
Acer's process better, and I'm no longer
able to negotiate Windows well after all these
years. By the way, in Windows 7, when you
try to use the only browser, IE, on a fresh
install, it is sooooooooooooo hard to avoid
Bing.

Anyway, if anyone can point me to something
useful, I'd appreciate it. I'm so mad
at Acer and Windows I feel like just tossing
the laptop in the garbage, but I can't afford
to do that, so if anyone knows the magic that
will get me out of Windows hell, I'd appreciate
it a lot.

I like the feature set in clementine and the UI but i have a
really old computer (6-7 years) and i heard it was a huge
memory hog (for a media player). you ever have issues with it?
