already switched to linux
Authored by: ukjaybrat on Wednesday, February 20 2013 @ 01:05 PM EST
I switched to Linux shortly after I installed windows 8.
Other than these two nits, I am loving life on Ubuntu now.

iTunes --> banshee
was rough at first. but it's better now. (as much as I hate
Apple, iTunes was better at organizing media than any other
app I've seen/used)

quicken
has no replacement yet (I just bought 2013 and is not
compatible with Wine yet)

IANAL

I'd think that given that it could potentially destroy any third-party software on Windows, Microsoft would react via giving some sort of global license to reassure people. (Probably they'd make sure they didn't leave any loopholes for themselves either; if anyone found one, it'd be pretty disastrous for them, and people would be sure to look.)

I don't think that third-party software that USES the API is a risk. Oracle aren't arguing that nobody can write Java programs that use their API. They're arguing that nobody can write a compatible system that implements the same API.

The biggest risk here will be to Wine, which emulates the Windows APIs. If Oracle win then Microsoft can shut Wine down completely, which of course makes it a lot harder to break out of the Windows ecosystem.
