Greed, depression

Right you are!

Competition doesn't need to be zero-sum, because that is when it becomes
destructive.

Our species has been through some very trying times in which resources were
insufficient for the survival of all. In those times competition could be for
the goal of mere survival.

Now we live in a (potentially) post-scarcity world, except that many of those in
power don't have any interest in guaranteeing the survival of all. Patents
exist to create artificial scarcity to prop up profits where there is no real
shortage.

The huge amount of money spent paying wealthy lawyers to protect vast fortunes
is simply obscene in a world where so many are forced to drink unsafe water!

The fortunes themselves were never in any danger, but countless millions are
spent just to protect their rate of growth!!!
