Wol's 1066 and all that
Authored by: Wol on Friday, February 15 2013 @ 06:33 PM EST
No I don't think Britain is any better than the rest. Infact, I'm appalled by
the repeated cxxp in the popular press harking back to our Imperial Greatness
and telling us we are so much greater than we really are.

Part of the reason for that, I expect, is my German ancestry, so I do NOT have a
side to take on that incessant dragging back up about the War (whichever one it
is). I remember my gran telling me of the foreign troops marching in to take
possession of her childhood homeland and her family fleeing in fear of their
lives after the end of the war. (They actually salvaged their belongings later -
they were well respected by the locals and the first thing the occupying troops
did was post a guard to protect their house from looters!).

Another chunk of my ancestry is Scottish. I guess (don't know) that that side of
the family - again - were driven from their homes, in the Clearances, this
time.

I have pride in our history, in my history. I'm proud of being a Brit, but I'm
proud of being german. I like to think I see things as they are - and I wish we
had more to be proud of. But seriously, I think the Americans - certainly as
they like to portray themselves - have yet to learn that.

Cheers,
Wol
