Conflating Fiction and Software
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, February 13 2013 @ 11:40 AM EST
if Oracle had its way, no one else could sell database software that responded to SQL queries and commands, because, you know, they'd be copying what Oracle's RDBMS does.

If so Oracle themselves would be in trouble for producing an implementation of an ANSI-defined language.

I think they really know better than that.

Treatment
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, February 13 2013 @ 12:25 PM EST
It comes down to the old story about how many psychiatrists it takes to change a
light bulb. Obviously, Larry doesn't want to change, and won't even admit that
he is a problem.

SQL predates Oracle
Authored by: cricketjeff on Wednesday, February 13 2013 @ 12:30 PM EST
So Oracle would be shelling out all their income to either Edgar Codd or IBM.
Oracle also would undoubtedly owe royalties from the large part of Java that is
derived from C/C++.

But if they were the suee rather than the sewer they would be paying for 3 dozen
lawyers to argue against their current position. I've had 4 three year olds, and
I recognise the breed!

You do realize software is at least partially fictional right?
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, February 13 2013 @ 12:31 PM EST

I mean.... to treat software - a totally abstract concept - as having a physical existence:

That's certainly fiction of the highest degree!

History is littered with examples...

Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Hitler, Elvis. Basically guys who were
surrounded by yes-men, afraid to rock the yacht. Remember, guys like Larry think
they are practicing 'aggressive business methods' or 'competitive business
tactics'. It's not personal, it's just business. Like the old robber barons,
they are moral cannibals.
