When I was learning to code, there were a number of "Remote CP/M"
systems and bulletin boards that I could connect with and download source code
for free. I learned a lot about good and bad coding practices from using and
reading those snippets and programs. There were also more than a couple of
groups on Usenet that published source code for a wide variety of applications
and utilities. Both the comp.sources.* and alt.sources.* families were wonderful
opportunities to copy and read real working code. A whole generation of
programmers grew up that way.
Now it sounds like we are getting back to that style of learning to write and
critique code. I don't see anything wrong with that. I believe the complainers
are worried about there being too many programmers if they all don't have to go
through a formal education process to prune some of them out. Starting salary
offers decrease when there are many applicants for new jobs.
