"I think we could all live without the cosmetic and
functional updates"

Do I own this device or not. That's the real question. The
whole state of things i appalling. The carriers are using
the DCMA not to protect their IP but as a marketing tool.

Let's say I have a Samsung Galaxy SII that I paid FULL Price
for to Virgin Wireless so I wouldn't have to be under
contract (I did) and I'm with one carrier. Now I want to
move to another carrier with my phone. I can't. It's
locked to Virgin Wireless. I'm locked to them. If I unlock
my phone I'm "breaking the law". What danger is their in
unlocking my phone, what IP would they lose? None. The only
danger is that I will switch to another carrier without
buying another phone.

So if I want to go to Verizon and have a Galaxy SII it
doesn't matter that I already have one. I have to buy
another one. Does that seem right to you?
