But we may be the only *intelligent* life form.

There is reasonable evidence that life needs a double-planet system (like our
earth-moon) to develop into anything complex.

Even if a planet is in the habitable zone, it is likely to precess on its axis
and either lock in to its sun so one side is permanently hot while the other is
frozen, or it will be so tilted on its axis that one day == one year.

Our axis has been on a pretty constant 23o tilt for as far back as we can tell,
but this appears to be very unusual - due almost certainly to the presence of
the moon.

And note that, relative to the body it is orbiting, the moon is the largest
object in the solar system by far!
