Why not?
Some species survive mass-extinctions, for all sorts of reasons.
Some amphibians aestivate, some can survive long periods as eggs, some live in
burrows or caves. Some may just have been lucky and the few individuals who
survived filled ecological niches where there wasn't avian or mammalian
competition.
It's a lottery, and as with all lotteries you can't predict the winners!
