"Legal protection"... errrr... that's what a copyright is.
"contributes to the economy"... there's the basic problem in a
nutshell... nothing to do with innovation or invention, simply that it puts $$$
in someone's pocket*. Any activity that involves an exchange of data/goods
contibutes to the economy. This has been true for ages. But now, doing it on a
computer suddenly makes a new invention.
The first step in reforming the patent system is to get the economy out of the
equation and go back to encouraging invention and the dissemination of
knowledge.
*And the contibute to the economy argument is a complete fail anyway, since when
you look at the beeelion$ tied up in litigation, it becomes apparent that it
isn't a "contribution", its a redistribution resulting in a net loss.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
