U.S. appeals court takes up closely watched patent fight
Authored by: PolR on Thursday, February 07 2013 @ 08:52 PM EST
Just wondering.

Do we have a volunteer scheduled to attend the hearing tomorrow? This is CLS
Bank vs Alice, the big case where the Federal Circuit wants to find a
"definition" of abstract idea for software patents.

News Picks Threads "Linux apps"
Authored by: LuYu on Friday, February 08 2013 @ 01:18 AM EST

I saw that article about "Linux apps" being worked on by the usually useless Gnome team, and it brings to mind something I have been wondering recently:

Why is the Dalvik engine, and by extension all Android apps, unavailable on the Linux desktop?
Aside from the dfference between i386 and ARM, I can imagine no good reason for this. Considering that Java was always billed as "write once run everwhere" and Dalvik is supposed to be at least "open source", I am doubly baffled.

Question number two: If Linux gains this app capability, how will developers be prevented from flooding our Free Software world with closed source lock-ware like that found on Android?

Facebook connect thingy
Authored by: Nick_UK on Friday, February 08 2013 @ 03:59 AM EST
Sort of connected, but on my notebook, I was getting fed up with so many pages
loading slow, and taking a look at what goes on, a lot now have a myriad of
buttons etc. facebook, twitter, reddit, likeme etc. etc. - all taking ages to
load their cookies and bloody whatnot.

So of them take at least twice as long to load (whatever they do) their stuff as
it takes for the page to load.

So after trying to block via hosts (I gave up on that idea, as sometimes it
makes firefox do funny things), I turned OFF javascript.

What a breathe of fresh air! Pages now load instantly without all the clutter!

Also I found a FF addon that places a small button on the toolbar, so I can
toggle JS on/off as required.

Recommended!

Nick

Nice article from the Ubersoft Guy about this here: Linky
My gut feeling is that someone has done "space marines" before.

Nothing under the sun that is made of man
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, February 08 2013 @ 03:15 PM EST

There's a nice little gem in the article:

if a human mind is capable of carrying out the steps in a method, that method is not patent-eligible
Now we only need to wait for the Judiciary to realize software consists of nothing more then steps that a human mind is capable of carrying out.
