Because without punishment...
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, February 08 2013 @ 12:18 PM EST

... people who choose to live a life without ethics have no incentive to change what they are doing no matter how harmful it is.

For some people, a little discipline (punishment) goes a long way and corrects behavior. For others, the cost of the discipline (punishment) must substantially exceed the benefit of the crime before change occurs.

And for what I hope are the very few, no level of disciplinary action works. And so to protect Society, one has no choice but to imprison for life.

Discipline: The practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience
Personally, I prefer discipline to contain both positive and negative reinforcements. Reward good behavior, punish bad behavior.
Revenge: The action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for a wrong suffered at their hands
Some people see no difference between the two definitions. As the saying goes:
    it's all in the thought
One can discipline without feeling the negative emotions associated with anger. But one can never achieve revenge without negative emotions surrounding anger being involved.
