Silverlight was intended to be "Microsoft Flash". However, everybody
else involved with the web was busy trying to get rid of Flash by incorporating
any of its useful features directly into the browser. Given that, what was the
market for Silverlight?

In other words, both Silverlight and Flash were technological dead ends.
Microsoft eventually recognized this, and pulled the plug on Silverlight's life
support. Instead, they started incorporating modern features into MS IE to try
to catch up with the other browser vendors.

They are by the way currently going down the same road with video chat.
Microsoft wants it to be a Skype plug-in (dressed up as a "proprietary
standard"), while Firefox, Chrome, and Opera are incorporating WebRTC
directly into the browser. I predict pretty much the same result in the end.
