Had a Mac for a year to learn OS/X (dev) then sold it
Authored by: TiddlyPom on Wednesday, February 06 2013 @ 12:06 PM EST
I am a UK Software Freelancer (Contractor) and bought a high end Mac Book Pro (through my business) as my primary laptop with the intention of dual booting it between OS/X and Ubuntu and using it to learn OS/X development.

OS/X is vastly better than Windows 7 (and definitely Windows 8) IMHO but OS/X is just too proprietary for my liking and seems to be getting more and more open source unfriendly. In addition it was very difficult to get the (SandyBridge Core i7) Mac to run Ubuntu well. Too many things did not work properly or well. Having to pay for the compilers and basic IDE did not endear Apple to me either. It was Apple's attitude to Android that clinched it so I ended up selling it (at a significant loss) to a work colleague who did want a Mac and buying a PC Specialist Laptop instead (for about the same price) - no preloaded Windows - yay!

I will never buy another Mac (nor another PC pre-loaded with Windows for that matter). I am writing this on an Acer C7 Chromebook running Chrubuntu.

Support Software Freedom - use GPL licenced software like Linux and LibreOffice instead of proprietary software like Microsoft Windows/Office or Apple OS/X

After six years without Windows
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, February 07 2013 @ 03:28 PM EST

Work computer. No maintenance.

Best thing I did was get rid of Windows on my home computers. OSX and Linux require way less maintenance. So yes, I'm more productive.

As to the different GUIs, it's like the different automotive layouts. My Toyota has the headlight control on a stalk. The Dodge has it on the dashboard. Only a moron couldn't learn the difference in under a minute.

Mac is a retarded PC

How Apple could do that to a perfectly good PC is beyond me... of course, look at the insecure POS they managed to make out of *BSD.

Proprietary software on proprietary hardware is a step in the wrong direction.

Linux is an aquired taste, for us early adopters, the benefits were certainly worth it. Just not having to deal with anti virus software and anti Adware is worth the price of admission for me.
