Why roll their own OS?
Authored by: Wol on Monday, February 04 2013 @ 05:25 PM EST
Remember that before Win95, people like Compaq and HP tweaked 3.1 et al to suit
their hardware. And had returns way below the industry average. As soon as MS
took that ability away with 95, their returns rocketed to the average.

Yes it'll take time to get back to that stage, but a tweaked linux distro will
be a lot better for both them and their customers, and competition will ensure
that happens pretty quick.

Cheers,
Wol

Why roll their own OS?

1. The "Granny" issue is the lack of pre-install, not the
lack of polish.

2. The main desktop these folks sell to is the business
community. At the business community level, the desktop is
locked down, no changes allowed. Unix & Linux actually do
this better than Windows, with features such as automounted
home directories.

3. HP is known for HP-UX. They also, for a long time, were
a principal supporter of Linux, and are a platinum member of
the Linux Foundation.

Moving to Linux is mainly moving away from MS - as proven by
the Android (base Linux) rise.

Why roll their own OS?

Remember HP, Lenovo et al are targeting people who've bought nothing else for thirty years but DOS/Windows.

I really doubt it. Thirty years ago was 1983. There were a few IBM PCs around then, but not many. There were 5.7 million worldwide PC sales from 1981 through 1985 according to http://www.c-i-a.com/pr0806.htm. And almost all of those would have gone to business, government, and academia.

That's way too small a market for any of those companies to be interested in.
