The First Peal of the Death Knell for the Dell PC
Authored by: OpenSourceFTW on Monday, February 04 2013 @ 01:48 AM EST
Microsoft ain't killing desktops. They'll just kill Dell.

Sad, I used to like Dell (on my third machine from them, been a customer since
2002).

Oh well, Long Live Linux.

A corollary: everyone that does a deal with Microsoft thinks they are special,
and This Time Will Be Different

Dell certainly thinks that they are a special partner. They have closely worked
with Microsoft for decades, and have gotten special early access to products.
They likely remember the good old days when the whole industry operated on 'zero
margin', but they still made huge profits thanks to the marketing incentives
that came from Intel and Microsoft. They were special back then, and would be
now.

A Microsoft investment would allow Dell to "concentrate" on delivering
WinTel solutions to businesses. But that limitation is actually a huge risk
when the computing world might be switching to completely new platforms. One
hint of this is when companies are promoting delivery of demanding Windows
applications through "the grid". That's basically saying "you
can still run your legacy stuff when you switch to Android/iOS/etc".
