The transition from 5 to 7 digit dialling depended upon
location. While Toronto used 7 digit dialling from the
early 50's, the exchange for our cottage (north of
Peterborough) still had 5 digit dialling well into the 70's.
There were less than 1000 phones in the Buckhorn region -
657-8xxx was buckhorn, and you could just dial 78xxx. Any
number that started with 7 was either Buckhorn, or Lakefield
(next exchange over and still a local call). Anywhere else
was long distance, and you had to start with 1 and either 7
or 10 digits after that. (Our phone line at the cottage is
still the same line - we have one of the few remaining party
lines, it's been about 3 decades since they stopped allowing
people to get a new party line, but as long as we don't
cancel the service we can keep it and it is a lot less
expensive than a "normal" line. It's also still a rotary
pulse dial phone.)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
