The Princess Phone required external power for the lighted dial. It used the
second pair of wires (yellow-black) in a standard 4-wire telephone cable for
powering the light. You connected the yellow-black pair to a transformer which
was then wired to AC power. So if you lost AC power, you lost the light, but
the phone innards would still function OK.

And yes, pulse dialing still works fine in the USA. My parents still have some
Western Electric rotary phones that still work great, and have much better sound
quality than the electronic junk manufactured nowadays.
