It's just a text message. It's really no different from the services who sell
"investment alert" stock promotion text message services (except it
isn't being run to make money). From the story it sounds like new phone
subscribers are now being automatically signed up for the service when they get
a phone (i.e. - it's "opt out"). If you want to unsubscribe (or
subscribe), you ought to be able to do this from the web site of whoever is
running the service.
Being able to force feed messages to a captive audience is the dream of a great
many people. The ultimate solution to this sort of problem is probably text
message apps that allow flexible spam filtering.
