Shriek! Automatic amber-alert texts startle cellphone users in U.S.

Hang on.

Is this system backdooring into my computer (Phones are computers now, have been
since before they became "smart")?

Or is it ignoring the "do not cold-call" list?

Good cause and all that, but lets think of the ramifications for a minute.

I'm sure there are thousands of good meaning people who have
something that you must absolutely NEED to be aware of. This
could be just the tip of the iceberg. Talk about DoS of
cell phones. I'm sure one of the draconian anti computer
crime laws could be used to handle this abuse.

Yup. My wife had her phone go off at work during the recent thunderstorms, and
it freaked her cow orkers out.

It seems you can't change the VERY LOUD siren sound on her phone unless you
choose to turn sound off globally, which is not very useful if you want to hear
incoming calls.
