I did not say "abstract idea", I said "idea". One is a
subset of the other.
Ian Al was using the wording of the patent laws to try argue that certain things
that are currently allowed to be patented shouldn't be allowed to be patented.
He was arguing that the specific things, such as machines and processes were
what the patents should be granted on, and my argument was that patents are
granted on a description of how to build the machine, or how to perform the
process, not on an actual specific machine, or an actual specific performance of
a process. And the description of how to build the machine, or how to perform
the process are merely ideas set down on paper, and are not an actual machine or
