If one looks at the politically charged legal systems in many parts of the world
you might conclude that a system staffed by "experts" is the worst
possible system.
Most people compare the US system to the seemingly more efficient European
systems. But those system suffer from the potential for abuse the jury is meant
to check.
In theory the Chinese and Iranian systems are similar to European systems, but
outcomes are very different.
On occasion even European systems have run off the rails as well, like in some
countries did in the 1930's or some South American countries in the 1960's and
1970's.
