The first mainframe I ever used (indirectly, on a school field
trip to a local university) had an architecture that would only
support a maximum of 128k words of 32 bits each (equivalent
to 512 kB). On the other hand, the first mainframe I used
directly as a post-high-school student at our local tech school
was an IBM System/360 Model 30, which came with 64 kB
(yes, that's sixty-four kilobytes) from the factory but which
had been upgraded (wow!) to 96 kB post-install.

The first computer I used (mentioned elsewhere) supported an entire *company* of
people, on about 256Kb ram.

I can remember us buying a 300Mb disk pack which more than *tripled* the storage
available.
