I think it was a 2708 EPROM that I programmed up to be a video card. My first
computer had a text-based rather than a bit-mapped video screen. There was a
small amount of static RAM (2114s?) which were filled with the screen text
content via tri-state links to the processor bus. Once those were switched out,
the video circuitry scanned the ASCII values into the EPROM which generated the
8x8 characters serially along each scan line.

I remember the luxury of my first character generator chip displacing the rats
nest EPROM version and giving much sharper character displays.
