huh a subsidized phone
Authored by: JamesK on Saturday, January 26 2013 @ 04:44 PM EST
The problem is some people get a phone from one carrier and then decide to move
to another before the subsidy has been paid for. My Google Nexus One was never
locked and I can take it to any of at least 3 carriers, along with their 2nd and
3rd string brands and their resellers. Someone with a locked phone is tied to
the carrier they bought it from, until the lock is removed. There are a lot of
people who think it's OK to sign a contract and just ignore their commitment and
move to another carrier before the end of the contract. If you lease a car,
there'd likely be a significant penalty for ending the lease early. Same should
apply to phones. You want out of your contract early? Then you have to
compensate whoever subsidized your phone. There are a lot of people who simply
don't understand that or refuse to.
