If the DMCA Police start cracking down then they are IMHO doing purely out of
spite.
Over here in Blighty the network operators are ok about SIM ONLY contracts.
People are free to move between networks taking their number with them.
Sometimes, I feel that the US Carriers have a terminal disaease when they try to
enfoce this sort of <redacted> behaviour.
A few months ago I tried to get a local SIMM for use in my phone while on
Business in San Diego. Two dealers wouldn't sell me one without a US Zip code
that wasn't a hotel. WTF?
In the end T-Mobile gave me a deal but the calling plan was more than I was
paying in the UK for an awful lot less caling time.
Land of the Free? Yeah Right.

Ubuntu & 'apt-get' are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which
is of course, "42" or is it 1.618?

... and starts selling unlocked smart phones direct to consumers.
If
everyone refused to purchase the phone through the carrier - the carrier's
wouldn't get much profit out of all those physical phones taking up warehouse
space.

I can see mass demonstrations of disobedience (fill a foot
ball stadium) and...
Invite the FEDs to show up and watch 10,000 college students
jail break their phones, and then line up to be arrested.
CHOICE... don't the powerful understand that is what folks
want?
