Those Chinese ideogram look-a-likes are probably badly smeared data blocks of
some sort. Look around the web for images from an air traffic control display.
What is barely readable from straight on and close up can smear badly from an
off-angle distance.

I used to operate a Sol-20 with a 9" (nine inch) green CRT and it was a
real strain to read it. An upgrade to a 12" (twelve inch) black and white
CRT made things a lot more comfortable. Also, remember the IBM PC's monochrome
(green) vs. Compaq's monochrome (amber) ?
