The patent was filed in 1995, and it was going to expire in
two years. Uniloc likely knew it was a weak patent but
thought they might give it a quick try before it expired.
They may have figured the cost of the litigation was small
for them with a potential to get a settlement, and it would
be worthwhile. They had little to lose, and there is
probably not much motivation for them to throw away any more
money on this pig.

This just exemplifies part of the problem with the current
system. A company like Uniloc has little incentive to act
like a good citizen and might as well try to pull this sort
of nonsense since there is little penalty for being such an
obvious bad actor.
