In most people's minds, arithmetic is about addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division. Many people are
stopped cold by fractions. The slope of a line is far too
advanced for the vast majority of the population. I remember
a friend of mine in Engineering College taking business
courses describing to me the consternation of Business
students trying to comprehend the slope of a line. It seems
to me that would be a very practical application of
mathematics for an MBA.
And these are the people who are making legislation and
interpreting it for highly technical matters. It's like Pooh
Bear being placed in charge in Buck Rogers' universe.
