MS won't release Munich's Linux Study ..
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, January 22 2013 @ 03:52 PM EST
"Microsoft and Hewlett Packard won't share a study claiming that the German city of Munich had its numbers wrong when it calculated switching from Windows to Linux saved the city millions -- although an HP employee did provide the data to a German publication that reported on the results" link

Off Topic Thread Here

One more Aaron Swartz message; I live in a small US town in the SE area, population about 23 thousand. Most people in this town have no clue about IT and don't care to. It's not a real big priority in the public school system and local businesses have trouble recruiting employees with even the most basic computer skills. So I was surprised when an Aaron Swartz article popped up in the local town newspaper. The article is a syndicated piece by one Froma Harrop, entitled "Aaron Swartz was accused of real crimes". In my opinion, it is a nasty piece of work, beating up on a recently deceased human who is not here to answer back. It is a cheap shot and Ms. Harrop pretty much draws and quarters Aaron's body with character assassination, misinformation, untruths and IP propaganda. It is sickening to read and turned my stomach. No matter what they think of young Aaron, have these people no shame? OK, now I'm mad. Really really really mad.

Forbes on Microsoft: sell sell sell
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, January 22 2013 @ 10:53 PM EST

According to this item in Forbes, Microsoft has dropped the ball so often and so decisively under chief Ballmer's tenure that they are now sell status.

Then again, coming from Forbes, it could just be more smoke and mirrors...

Farnell

There is also an affordable HDMI to VGA converter.

I also found this from FTDI, which would seem to be generally useful, not just for the Pi.

Microsoft Releases Windows Phone 7.8 SDK, but no update yet
Authored by: Gringo_ on Wednesday, January 23 2013 @ 10:06 AM EST

Microsoft has released an SDK for Windows Phone 7.8 – aka the last ever update for Windows Phone 7 handsets, which have been orphaned by the company’s platform shift to Windows Phone 8 (built on a different kernel).
link.

I t would seem pointless to put out an SDK. What developer is going to bother updating their Win Phone 7 apps for those few unfortunates duped into being beta testers for the early model?

The CSM put out a great article + video about asteroid mining...

Deep Space Industries said Tuesday it plans to launch small prospector missions to asteroids beginning in 2015. The goal of asteroid mining is to make space exploration more affordable.

Report: Microsoft in talks to invest up to $3B in Dell to help take the PC maker private
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 23 2013 @ 12:05 PM EST
They're trying to Bungie Dell!

To properly "bungie" requires only two steps:

1. Find a profitable company upending your business model.

2. Buy it and hope you can kill "Mac Gaming" or "Linux
Desktops" in time.
