I value life. As a result, I don't applaud anyone committing
suicide.
If a serial killer did so:
I would feel it's a positive
thing that the individual is no longer around to commit such crimes against
society again!
But I still wouldn't be applauding:
Show approval or
praise by clapping
Additionally:
I do not believe the "ends justifies
the means".
So abuse of power that leads to someones death - whether that
someone is innocent or guilty - is still abuse that should not have
occurred.

a) There is a difference between the damage/hurt Madoff caused and what Swartz
caused.
b) probably Madoff could afford an expensive legal team, before found guilty
(assets stripped now? )
Attempted ansd succeded suicides connected to that story on the Madoff side.
(Who knows what happened on their victims side.)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Ken Lay, at the heart of the Enron scandal, faced less time than this. That was
a vast, extended conspiracy and fraud that required repeated explicitly illegal
behavior by people that extracted tens of millions of dollars for themselves,
costing others billions.
Key Lay faced an estimated 20-30 years, less time than in this case.
The fact around his death remain fuzzy, but it's widely believed that he
essentially committed suicide. Not by hanging himself, but by an over-the-top
cocaine and hooker weekend at his vacation home in Snowmass (one of 15 houses he
owned). Hey, that's Because he died before sentencing, his conviction was
overturned and his family kept the money. Most property had already been
transferred to his wife, leaving just enough to pay the lawyers.

... as a result, the police had no option but to fire back and killed the
accused.
In a similar incident, the police officer didn't like the 6 year
old pointing a lolipop at him - so he drew his weapon and fired on the child
killing him.
If it were Madoff instead of Swartz we would be
applauding her not criticizing her.
The point:
Just because a
particular response is appropriate in one situation does not make it appropriate
in all situations!
Caveat: Neither the situation with the uzi nor the
lolipop are based on true events. They are provided only to better outline the
concept identified in the point made.
