MIT is a large and diverse organization, with
lots of very independent individuals and many
great minds. A regular corporation is quite
different in that it can be led very far astray
by a single incompetent decision maker at the top,
so far astray that it can lose any hope of ever
finding its way back again. The public image
disasters we are seeing with Nokia and Apple,
and in my opinion also with Microsoft, are most
likely an effect of top level managers being
incompetent, too powerful and unwilling to listen
to reason, while still being allowed to run the
company. I do not have any great hope for ever
feeling good about owning an Apple product again,
but hopefully, MIT is better than a company at
finding its way back from a brush with the dark side.
