I find the comment of "everything (company with a bad image
does) is tarnished" to be tough to swallow.

MIT's report will tell us whether they have indeed sullied
their reputation. I'm already disappointed with CMU becoming
a patent troll, as that was my dream school to attend. I
also remember the speech of Randy Pausch, as that was
heartbreaking.

Once a company has crossed that deep end into unethical
behavior, they don't come back. However, I don't know that
MIT's actions here (obviously waiting on their report and
more facts) are unethical and/or in that same category.
