IOW, instead of US$2.99 per copy to print, it will be US$4.99 per copy to
print.
(4 colour offset done in Malaysia or china. Not colour POD done in the US.)
I'll also point out that there is no appreciable difference in price between
college textbooks in electronic format, and in print format. (I am aware that
layout/design costs are th same for both ebooks and print books.)

It is just market segmentation, nothing else. I'm fully willing to buy book on
cheaper paper with less useless images and uglier colors. It is just irrational
to pay 200$ to get nicer paper.
International copies of the same book have less quality paper and color, you
learn exactly the same things from them, cost less and it is illegal to sell
