Sci Fi novella looked at such

"The Sensitive Man" by Poul Anderson addressed such concerns in part.
It's a short story and worth a read.

Wilfully stupid
Authored by: stegu on Friday, January 18 2013 @ 06:15 AM EST
Stupid in its raw form, i.e. lack of intelligence,
is probably only about as common as it ever was.
The kind of stupid that is increasing is what I would
call "wilfully stupid": uneducated and unwilling to
learn.

I try to fight that wherever I see it. I work at a
university partly for the very personal reward I
get from inspiring people to learn. I try to make
a difference where I can, and when I succeed it feels
great. Wilful stupidity can be fought and reduced,
but it is an eternal battle. As society gets more
complex, the number of people who seek to explain
it in overly simple terms will increase. If we could
only make people embrace the complex and messy
world we live in as something wonderful and amazing
that we are all struggling to understand, we would
be much better off.

Complaint - PJ - that wasn't a News Pick, it was a News Avalanche :) 167 pp when saved as pdf. To add wierd to the stupid, as I was reading Shank's piece, local radio was replaying a long interview with Chandra Nair on Consumptionomics. Radio New Zealand
