It's one thing to err a little in one direction or another

It's altogether another to err on the side of extremism.

Whether or not someone of authority tells you that you must pull the trigger on those 6 children lined up against the wall whose only crime was to steal a pack of lolipops does not alter the fact that you have a conscience and the intelligence and free will to use it.

Obviously if you are part of the army in wartime, you will be making a very hard decision because (as I understand) you can be executed on the spot by your commanding officer for refusing to follow orders.

I don't - not for an instance - believe Ortiz Job was at peril if she had chosen to exercise a conscience and been more reasonable. And she certainly wasn't facing immediate execution.

Since you speak as though she must follow the letter of the Law:

Why aren't the Corporations who are installing rootkits on people's devices against the owner's very explicit instructions otherwise facing equivalent charges?
Sorry - but for myself, you're explanation is not an acceptable reason to explain what happened.

But my opinion is just that and holds very little weight in the matter. Given sufficient time, we may very well find out even more about what happened - such as finding out what the answers to the questions Senator Cornyn asked are.
