Countdown to Mobile Moment - When Will Mobile Phone Accounts Outnumber Humans? I say July 2013
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 16 2013 @ 10:29 AM EST

If Tomi is right this makes Mobile the most popular technology of all time from several points of view:

1) Speed of adoption
2) Number of users
3) Value to users

Number 3 might seem odd, but communication is what sets humans apart, and mobile allows humans to communicate faster and easier than any other technology.

Countdown to Mobile Moment - When Will Mobile Phone Accounts Outnumber Humans? I say July 2013 (we are at 6.7B already)

Fun Fact - rms & billg were at Harvard at the same time
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 16 2013 @ 12:47 PM EST
rms = attended Harvard starting in 1970 and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in physics

billg = enrolled at Harvard in the fall of 1973, dropped out after a few years: they gave him an honorary doctorate in 2007

Makes one wonder how close their paths came to crossing there.

17 years for "Ethnic Cleansing in LA" & they wanted to jail Swartz for 35?
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 16 2013 @ 03:16 PM EST

I thought they were talking about Bosnia at first. Horrifying. But the highest sentence was only 17 years, and they were trying to hit Aaron Swartz for 35? Sheesh.

Ontario Court Rejects US Demand for Full Access to Megaupload Servers Seized in Canada
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 16 2013 @ 03:34 PM EST
http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/6755/125/

The conclusion states:

the appropriate balance of the state interest in gathering evidence and privacy interests in information can be struck by an order that the servers be brought before the court pursuant to s.15 (2) so that the court can make an order refining what is to be sent. By this, I do not mean that at this stage the servers must physically be delivered to the courthouse. The application for a sending order is adjourned without a fixed return date, returnable on 7 days’ notice. If counsel are unable to agree as to how the scope of relevant material is to be defined then the matter may be brought back before a judge of this court for determination of that issue.

Time's running out for comments on UK Parliamentary consultation on open science publishing
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, January 17 2013 @ 01:19 AM EST
Last September, the UK parliament earmarked £10 Million pounds from the science budget to support open access scientific publishing. Earlier this week, the UK parliament announced that they are seeking feedback on this policy, including 'how the Government should address the concerns raised by the scientific and publishing communities about the policy'.

The deadline is this weekend (Jan 18) so it seems important to get the word out.

Defund the ITU
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, January 17 2013 @ 04:29 PM EST

Just saw this on my Twitter feed. There's a White House petition to defund the Intenational Telecommunication Union, over its attempt at a backdoor takeover of the Internet. Apparently the U.S. is responsible for 7.3% of the agency's funding, money which the agency is using against us geeks.

I'm not American, so I can't sign. Well, I could, but morally I don't think I should. I suggest you sign, and pass this on to everyone you know.

Amazon sticks it to Apple
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, January 17 2013 @ 10:39 PM EST

Today Amazon released an HTML5 web based store for the Amazon Music Store to be accessed from iOS devices.

For Apple it’s a taunt. A taunt against the lock in on-device music sales that Apple has, thanks to it’s tight control of third party apps and the clause in the terms and conditions that says you can’t duplicate software and services that are already present on the device.

But the biggest issue Apple is going to have with this? It bypasses the terms and conditions of the Apple App Store, and Cupertino will not see the requisite 30% of any income derived from a service running on an iOS device application. The MP3 file is not downloaded via the HTML5 site, but accessed through the Amazon Cloud Player application already available on iOS.

Jeff Bezos is almost daring Apple to react.

If they do react, the PR benefit is going to be huge...

One year ago today, you help us beat SOPA. Thanks Reddit. This is EFF, Ask Us Anything.
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, January 18 2013 @ 04:42 PM EST
A year ago today, on January 18th 2012, the largest protest in Internet history stopped the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) — a bill that would have allowed for the censorship of large portions of the Internet — in its tracks.

Perhaps no site was more important in this fight than Reddit. You guys helped organize the protest against GoDaddy, you started forcing members of Congress to come out against SOPA, and you were the first to declare January 18th blackout day.

So from all of us on the activism team at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, we just want to say thank you again.

But the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. And the fight for Internet freedom continues. So Ask Us Anything about the next battles over Internet freedom in the coming year and we will try our best to answer any and all questions that come our way.

After all the hooha about LiIonbatteries in passenger luggage it seems a bold step, where no plane has gone before, to use them as primary electrical storage on the same planes that ban pax carrying them. Is anyone familiar with situation able to say what is the object pictured in this Register story ?

Oxford: "admissions should be truly needs-blind" - denies admission to poor student
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, January 19 2013 @ 05:48 PM EST
An Oxford college is being sued for discriminating against poorer students applying to study for postgraduate courses. St Hugh's, which was founded in 1886, is being taken to court for choosing applicants not just on academic merit, but also on their ability to prove they can pay tens of thousands of pounds for tuition fees and living expenses.

It is claimed that, along with other Oxford colleges, St Hugh's is "selecting by wealth".

Application 20130012270, published in the database of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Jan. 10, is for what the Redmond, Washington-based company calls “inconspicuous mode for mobile devices.”

Why, back in the good old days, we called that a knob.

Rootworms Are Resistant to Monsanto Corn in Two States
Authored by: SpaceLifeForm on Saturday, January 19 2013 @ 10:47 PM EST
Link

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said rootworms in Illinois and Iowa have become resistant to an insecticide produced by Monsanto Co. (MON) corn, and four more states likely have resistant worms.

The resistance finding is based on a test developed at the Iowa State University rather than the regulatory definition, which is “flawed” and should be changed, the EPA said today in a report examining Monsanto’s product. Likely resistance in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska fields need to be confirmed, the agency said.
