[Microsoft] Why don't you try:

Actually building a decent product that will compete fairly in the market

They would probably try that if only they knew how. They are doing their best with the people who Google didn't hire, and in some areas they are doing okay. But those areas generally relate to aspects of server-based software such as SQL Server.

It looks as though fairly soon the only Microsoft software with reasonable market share will be Windows Server and products installed on it: they will be the last to go due to inertia and replacement cycles. And a few copies of Windows VMs for developers of bespoke software running on Windows Server. Let's hope that Barclays Bank starts a trend.
